Learn to Fly with the Humber Flying Club

The Humber Flying Club carries out a multitude of courses for pilots ranging from zero experience to Professional Multi Engine Class Ratings and ATPL. Details of the flight training courses currently on offer at Humber Flying Club are listed below with the approximate hours taken to complete. All the hours listed are MINIMUMS.

Private Pilots Licence

The basic licence where everyone starts. Most students take a few more hours to qualify, especially if the course is not done full time. Currently this course is offered on Cessna 150 aircraft.

Pre entry requirements

None, though it is recommended to get a Class 2 medical before starting or a Class 1 if you are going on to professional licences later. If you intend going for the new National PPL (NPPL), please see your own family GP. The medical for this is similar to the HGV class 1 for lorry drivers.

Course duration

Currently 45 hours flying under JAR, but AOPA have introduced a National PPL (NPPL) of 32 hours flying shortly to fill the void created by the more difficult JAR PPL. Now available at HFC. Please enquire at the HFC office for details.

End of course qualifications

JAR PPL and Radio Licence. The pilot may fly in good weather by day with passengers.

Additional Ratings - Night Rating

Qualifies the PPL to fly at night with passengers provided the pilot remains current. Pre start qualifications are 50 hours total and 25 hours P1.

IMC Rating

Soon to become the IWR Rating under JAR, though it will not be recognised outside the UK. This qualification gives the privilege of flying in poor weather and making ILS approaches down to 500 feet above airfield level in visibility down to 1850 metres. Pre start requirements are 10 hours solo after PPL of which 5 hours must be point to point cross country. The course is 20 hours ground training plus 15 flight hours training with a ground exam and flight test.

Approved Instrument Rating

We offer an Approved Course to suitably qualified pilots. The qualification will give the dubious privilege of instrument flight in Category A airspace down to 200 feet and 600 metres anywhere in the world provided the aircraft is properly equipped. The training is identical to that required for professional pilots if done on a multi engined aircraft. For PPLs, this rating can be done on a single.

Multi Engine Rating

A natural progression for the serious business person, giving the added safety of another engine for long distances or over water. This is even more useful when combined with the Instrument Rating above.

Approved BCPL

This rating has now been discontinued and now becomes the Approved Modular CPL under JAR. More on this later.

Approved Modular JAR CPL

We are now fully approved to do this course which followed on from the old BCPL. Course content is 25 hours or 28 hours if not multi rated before the course.

Pre Entry requirements

Written CPL or ATPL exams done, Class 1 medical and 150 hours total and 90 P1. Night Rating required before issue. The course duration is 25 hours. IMC holders gain no advantage and must do the full 25 hours. We expect to complete this course in 3 weeks with the test in the 4th week. The course commences on the Cessna 172 aircraft and finishes on the PA44. If the candidate requires to do a Multi Engine rating at the same time, the CAA have allowed the courses to be combined and the course then becomes 28 hours flying. At the moment the course and test are all conducted from Humberside Airport. A CLASS RATING is needed to open the new licence. Please see below.

Approved Modular SINGLE ENGINE Instrument Rating

This course has been discontinued because of the low demand and high approval fees.

Approved Modular MULTI ENGINE Instrument Rating

This course is now approved. Approval was received on 29th. January 2000. This course will be commenced on the Simulator, with a module on the Cessna 172 and completed on the PA44 Seminole. You can, of course, do the whole course on the PA44 instead of the part on the Cessna 172 if you wish. We expect this course to take between 5 and 6 weeks full time. Part time attendance does not seem to work with this very intensive course, nor do other distractions like mobile phones and demands from current employers.

NON Approved SINGLE / MULTI ENGINE Instrument Rating

At the moment, the experienced NON APPROVED route has disappeared under JAR. The only candidates exempt the full approved JAR course are those with another ICAO Instrument Rating.

Professional CLASS RATINGS - PA44 Seminole

This CLASS RATING or an equivalent MULTI ENGINE rating is necessary to open a new ATPL. The course is 7 hours groundschool, 6 hours day flying and 1 hour night circuits. Now that we combine the training, the test is usually conducted by the Examiner as part of the Commercial flight test - sorry - Skill Test according to JAR.

Instrument Rating Renewals

We do a very economical line in Instrument Rating renewals for both Private Pilots and Professional Pilots alike. The training is exactly the same for either. The test is usually out of Humberside to suit you. We book the whole thing so all you have to do is get in touch and set it up. A recent development has been the inclusion of the Multi Engine Class rating renewal on the same flight.
